What Can I Say Next?

《把话接下去》

Find your next line, even when you didn't catch it, didn't understand, or can't think of the word.

You may be able to read English, yet get stuck in a conversation over a time, an unfamiliar word or a sudden question. You know which part you missed, but in the moment you can't think how to speak up.

This book starts with these small pauses: if you didn't catch something, ask the person to say it again; if you didn't understand, ask what a word means or ask for an example; if you can't think of a word, describe what it is used for and where it is. First get the information you need, then listen to how the other person responds.

Who it is for

  • Adults who are native Chinese speakers and have studied basic English, but tend to get stuck in real conversations
  • Readers who still find short English sentences hard can rely on the Chinese to understand first, then gradually cover up the Chinese
  • This book can be used on its own: start directly with the sticking points you run into most often

The characters in the books, Lin and Maya, are fictional adult colleagues, and the situations are mostly training, work arrangements, community events and everyday errands. The English is common American usage; you are not expected to imitate any particular accent. The three books build on one another step by step in communication skills and do not correspond to CEFR or other language levels.

What you will practice

  • When you didn't catch something: ask the person to repeat, slow down, or fill in just the one part you missed; check names, numbers and spelling
  • When you heard it but didn't understand: ask what a word means, ask them to put it another way or give an example, and say how you understood it so you can check
  • Make your questions specific: confirm the time, place, quantity, options and what to do next
  • When you can't say it yet: give yourself time to think; when you forget a word, describe what it is used for and where it is; when you say something wrong, start again
  • Make a specific request, explain which step you are stuck on, ask for a small adjustment, and confirm what the other person agreed to
  • When a call keeps breaking up or the other person still doesn't understand, try another approach; finally, wrap up briefly and confirm the next step
